Yes, ROBLOX uses an adapted language of Lua called RBX.Lua. For the most part, it functions like normal lua. However, events and global variables are slightly different then you'd be used to. Check wiki.roblox.com for more information on ROBLOX specific methods and objects.

Like m27frogy said, RBX.Lua is a FORM of Lua. Pure Lua on its own has no coding value whatsoever. It has to be modified in order to suite its purpose for each game individually.
