Tricky Riddle

My dad told me this one when we were reading riddles on a website;

12 pears were hanging up on a tree, 12 soldiers came marching towards them.
Each took 1 pear but 11 were remaining. How was that possible?

only one of the soldiers ate their pear and the 11 others didn't? since the riddle didn't specify where the pears need to be remaining from.
