I understand metatables, but..

I find them utterly and completely useless.

Apart from maybe __metatable and any other metamethods which cannot be achieved through an alternate way, inluding __index = {}.. Why not just add them to the table in the first place..?

Can somone give me a practical situation in which they come in usefull?

Nope. I always find a way to work around them. Well, they might be useful if you try and build an AI that learns as it goes.
